It's Emmy season again and from now on until September 18, every TV geek will talk about who is going to win, who deserved or didn't deserve to be nominated, who was overlooked and so on.
You can find the complete list of nominations
here. Here's my take on the nominations for the main categories in the comedy and reality TV race, keeping in mind that, although I watch a lot of TV series (
and I mean a lot!), I don't watch them all.
Outstanding Comedy Series:
- Glee
- Parks and Recreation
- The Office
- Modern Family
- 30 Rock
- The Big Bang Theory
First up, I love that "The Big Bang Theory" got nominated; I'm absolutely in love with the story and the cast, I love geeks and everyone on the show is simply amazing. I doubt they'll win, though, as Emmys tend to favor "30 Rock" and "The Office", which I tried to watch, but never got hooked on. I don't understand all the "Glee" nominations ("Glee"'s not really a comedy, and it's not very good, either). I would have replaced either except for "TBBT" with "Nurse Jackie", which I love for its unusual-ness. The other comedies I watch - "How I Met Your Mother" and, more recently, "Chuck" - didn't really stand a chance at being nominated. "Chuck" is fun to watch for the geek in me, but I'm not in love with it as I am with "Big Bang"; as for "HIMYM", it's more of a revamped "Friends" (I think it's better than "Friends" story-wise, but not when it comes to the cast), so people don't take it very seriously.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
- Laura Linney as Cathy Jamison ("The Big C")
- Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton ("Nurse Jackie")
- Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope ("Parks and Recreation")
- Melissa McCarthy as Molly Flynn ("Mike & Molly")
- Martha Plimpton as Virginia Chance ("Raising Hope")
- Tina Fey as Liz Lemon ("30 Rock")
I must say that I only watch "Nurse Jackie" from this list, and Edie Falco is absolutely amazing as the (kind of) female version of Gregory House. I've heard good things though about all the others, but I wish I'd seen Kaley Cuoco (Penny from "The Big Bang Theory") in that list, I don't get why she's so underrated. From other shows I watch, only Yvonne Strahovski of "Chuck" could have been nominated, but I don't think she's a good enough actress to have made the cut.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
- Matt LeBlanc as Matt LeBlanc ("Episodes")
- Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper ("The Big Bang Theory")
- Steve Carell as Michael Scott ("The Office")
- Johnny Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter ("The Big Bang Theory")
- Louis C.K. as Louie ("Louie")
- Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy ("30 Rock")
I am awfully happy about the two nomination for "The Big Bang Theory", Jim Parsons won last year and was nominated in 2009 as well, but Johnny Galecki is at his first nod, and it was long overdue. I'm kind of bored of seeing Alec Baldwin on the list again. And, since Carell is leaving "The Office", I bet you he will be the one winning this year, which is just sad. From my other comedies, Josh Radnor as Ted in "HIMYM" is not funny enough to make the list and has never even been considered for a nomination, while Zachary Levi, although deserving, had to deal with a tough crowd of funnymen.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
- Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester ("Glee")
- Betty White as Elka Ostrosky ("Hot in Cleveland")
- Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy ("Modern Family")
- Kristen Wiig as Various characters ("Saturday Night Live")
- Jane Krakowski as Jenna Maroney ("30 Rock")
- Sofia Vergara as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett ("Modern Family")
I hate Jane Lynch in everything she's ever done, so I'd rather not see her on this list or as Emmy host, for that matter. Betty White, Julie Bowen and Jane Krakowski are great actresses and, though I don't watch any of the shows they're on right now, I loved them in other things they did ("Boston Legal" for White and Bowen, "Ed" for Julie Bowen, "Ally McBeal" for Krakowski). From my other shows, Eve Best (very deserving, but underrated) and Merritt Wever of "Nurse Jackie" are not visible enough. Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch of "The Big Bang Theory" are quite good (Melissa also on "True Blood"), and I would have liked to see at least one of them make the list, but the competition in the supporting actor/actress race is always tougher than for lead. Cobie Smulders was good in the last season of "HIMYM", but not good enough, I'm afraid, whilst co-star Alyson Hannigan's constant absence from the nominees list through the years (not even one nod for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", which is simply outrageous!) is annoying. At least one of these could have easily replaced Lynch.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
- Jon Cryer as Alan Harper ("Two and a Half Men")
- Chris Colfer as Kurt Hummel ("Glee")
- Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett ("Modern Family")
- Ed O'Neill as Jay Pritchett ("Modern Family")
- Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker ("Modern Family")
- Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy ("Modern Family")
All this
"Modern Family" love is very annoying. I don't watch the show nor do I plan to, no matter how much publicity they make for it. I don't contest
Ed O'Neill's qualities, but there's just too much
"Modern Family", period. There's absolutely no reason for
Neil Patrick Harris to be left out, he's easily the funniest funny man on TV right now. Why do these awards always commend straight actors playing gays, but seem to forget gays who play straighs is beyond my understanding. Also, last
"HIMYM" season gave Marshall a very good storyline, and
Jason Segel could have been considered for a nod.
Simon Helberg of
"The Big Bang Theory" is also great as Howard and I'm pissed that the show's cast (other than Jim Parsons and, this year, Johnny Galecki), doesn't get enough recognition.
Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series:
- Kristin Chenoweth as April Rhodes ("Glee")
- Dot-Marie Jones as Coach Beiste ("Glee")
- Gwyneth Paltrow as Holly Holliday ("Glee")
- Cloris Leachman as Maw Maw ("Raising Hope")
- Elizabeth Banks as Avery ("30 Rock")
- Tina Fey as Host ("Saturday Night Live")
I don't really have any opinion on this category except to say, what's with all the
"Glee" nominations? It's really annoying. And I miss
Christine Baranski being nominated for her interpretation of Beverly Hofstadter in
"The Big Bang Theory".
Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series:
- Idris Elba as Lenny ("The Big C")
- Zach Galifianakis as Host ("Saturday Night Live")
- Matt Damon as Carol ("30 Rock")
- Will Arnett as Devin Banks ("30 Rock")
- Nathan Lane as Pepper Saltzman ("Modern Family")
- Justin Timberlake as Host ("Saturday Night Live")
Not much to say here either. Except that Justin Timberlake's nomination is hilarious.
Outstanding Reality-Competition Program:
- So You Think You Can Dance
- The Amazing Race
- Project Runway
- American Idol
- Dancing with the Stars
- Top Chef
Technically not comedy, but I didn't want to make a post just for reality TV. I don't watch reality television that much, I actually dread it, but I am a big "Survivor" fan and sometimes I throw an eye to "SYTYCD" and "DWTS" for the dancing stuff, and to "TAR" for Phil Keoghan and the locations. I hate that "Survivor" hasn't made the list since 2006, it's time for them to get back on track. I loved the last season (Nicaragua not so much), but I have to say I'm a big Boston Rob fan and didn't really care that this whole season was only about him, so I agree with the ones who think it was boring because no one else really played the game.
Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program:
- Jeff Probst ("Survivor")
- Cat Deeley ("So You Think You Can Dance")
- Phil Keoghan ("The Amazing Race")
- Tom Bergeron ("Dancing with the Stars")
- Ryan Seacrest ("American Idol")
First, I think Jeff Probst is the best host on TV, and not only because I'm a "Survivor" fanatic, but because he is "Survivor", the show wouldn't be what it is without him. Secondly, I love Phil Keoghan and his amazing accent. Thirdly, I'm a Seacrest hater. I think this sums it up.
